Ebook About “A boon to all those who plant, care for, and love trees.”—Nina Bassuk, author of Trees in the Urban Landscape The Tree Book is the go-to reference to more than 2,400 species and cultivars, from two of the biggest names in horticulture—Michael A. Dirr and Keith S. Warren. The featured trees include those widely available in the nursery trade, some new and promising choices, and a selection of overlooked options that deserve renewed interest. Each tree profile includes the common and botanical names along with details on foliage; flowers, seeds, fruits, and cones; native range; adaptability; and popular uses in landscapes. The Tree Book is a must-have resource for landscape architects, city foresters, horticulturists, and enthusiastic home gardeners.Book The Tree Book: Superior Selections for Landscapes, Streetscapes, and Gardens Review :
This is more a reference book of encyclopedic proportions at 940 text- and picture-packed pages long, than simply "The Tree Book," as it is humbly titled. Dirr and Warren's massive work, covering 2,400 species and cultivars in detail, is an absolute must-have for any landscape designer, urban planner, architect, avid gardener, nursery-person, or general arborist and tree enthusiast. The book is large and bulky and is not for outdoor and travel use; it is a reference work, not a field guide. With that bulkiness comes substance. The text is extremely descriptive and photos are of a high quality. There are a few species in which I wished to see more images of the tree in flower or in autumnal [fall] leaf. Not all cultivars are pictured, but as many as possible are. All cultivars are described in vivid detail.Every species is described according to the following: common & scientific name; leaf retention; size, shape, growth rate; foliage, incl. seasonal changes/color; flowers/fruits/cones; native range; adaptability incl. hardiness zones; landscape use; street tree use; and, availability in trade. This ensures the potential buyer/planter of any new tree knows exactly what they can expect and how to properly position, select, and care for any tree. The text also describes any potential diseases or blight that may inflict harm on any particular species, and sometimes authors will point out their personal favorites. The Tree Book does not have a flashy format or modernist aesthetic, but that isn't really the point of this work. Species are arranged alphabetically by scientific name, and the book is formatted simply and arranged logically. The index is comprehensive with all species listed under common and scientific names; to find cultivars by index, you will need to know the parent [nominate] species.Take note that the book focuses on temperate regions of the northern hemisphere. This book is written primarily for a US and Canadian audience, often referencing growing conditions, nursery availability, and specimen vitality throughout the northern two-thirds of the continent. Once you get to USDA hardiness zone 10 or warmer, you may need additional reference works, as many subtropical species are not described herein. However, between zones 9 and 3, you have all you need in 'The Tree Book' for anything bigger than a shrub. Customers in New Zealand, southern Australia, and most of Europe may also find this work helpful, but species and cultivars on offer may differ. South African readers will find too few of these species in the nursery trade to find it useful beyond as a collectors book. Probably the nicest tree book ever written. Endless high quality pictures of (seemingly) every cultivar in existence. I can browse this book forever . . . just wish I had the land and money to plant one of every tree in the book! Definitely a beautiful book.
